- Platinum coated nickel wire or platinum wire of around one foot.
- Small piece of wood or plastic.( TO SUPPORT THE CATHODE AND ANODE )
- 9 volt battery clip.( TO ATTACH THE BATTERY )
- 9 volt battery.
- Transparent tape.
- Water.
- Voltmeter.
To make it, follow the steps:
- The platinum coated wire is cut into two 6 inch long pieces and attach them to the spring. These will be electrodes of the fuel cell.
- Strip the plastic insulation off the wire and twist the bare battery lead wires onto the electrodes we have just made. Now attach the battery clip and two wires to the electrodes. These wires will be later used to attach voltmeter.
- Then tape the electrodes securely to the wooden piece.
- Now, tape the wooden piece to a glass containing water so that only the electrodes are inside the water and not the twisted wire connection.
- Now, the red wire is connected to the positive terminal of the voltmeter and the black is connected to the negative terminal of the voltmeter.
- Make sure that the voltmeter reads 0 volts at this point. There may be a deflection such 0.01 volts but that can be neglected.
